Fresh new student room
With my little Atoma book, a pen, and a map of Ghent, I started my holy search for the best student house in the city of Ghent. With a list of 30 adresses on yesterday, and a new list of 20 adresses today, I discovered new areas of the most social city of Belgium.
I never thaught I would do this in my life. The first time in Brussels, I took the student room that was owned by family, the second time in Ghent I started to search in September, and luckely found a very good room.
But this time, I wanted to do it for real.
It’s really fun to hunt for student flats. In some streets, I apparantly wasn’t the only one with the idea, and I could feel the stressy mood hanging over each others shoulders. Who would be the first to have the best one ?
Eventually, after having written down some favorite adresses, I just called a number that was hanging on a Rent-paper in a street at the end of the neighbourhoud Coupure. The man on the phone told me that only 15 minutes ago he has attached the poster on the window, and already 2 students (including me) have passed by. A couple of minutes later, he arrived to show me the room.
As I wasn’t sure yet (there is ALWAYS something better), I finished my round with a last house, but as it was on the 5th floor with 30 students in the building, I just called back the man and confirmed.
So where am I sitting ?
I won’t tell the exact address, as you know I’m quite prudent with personal information on the internet, but it’s situated behind the jail “Nieuwe wandeling”. (in fact, I can see the pivot wire out of my window !) It’s close to buss stops, and 5min walking from tram 4. In rainy days I can take the buss to my school (supposing that I really apply for the school). The whole area is very popular with students. The only bad thing is that my street gives a view to some ugly high flat.
What sort of house ?
I believe it was for 4 or 5 students. There is a small kitchen, and a court with bikes and some greenery. My room is quite small (but bigger than my last one) with a very big table. I think I’ll have to remove a chair if I want to place my keybord. 2 gigabites each month for internet isn’t quite much, but this is the case mostly everywhere. And if you go over it, you just pay more.
I have the feeling that my student life is only beginning.
Now time to get my diploma !

Hi there!
I just found your page while searching an accomodation in Ghent! I’m arriving in Ghent next week on monday and still haven’t found an appropriate kot/studio etc.
So here I’m gonna ask you: ….do you know a good adress where I can try once more to find a room!?!?!?
I’m from Switzerland and usually they have some rooms left for the exchange students in the University Residences…but not this time
So thanks for your help and check out the site of a friend of mine…
best regards,
Christian
