Maar niet enkel het wegvallen van die bezoekers is jammer. Vooral de manier en stijl waarop hij schreef boeide mij. Die ene Luc Van Braekel kon in z’n broek doen. De mannen van ClickX hadden moeite om het niveau van die ene wedstrijd gelijk te houden. En het blonde gevaar van Brasschaat had er een vijand bij.

Van de barbecue met de kring der Bruno bloggers is er jammer genoeg nooit is gekomen. Het zou zowaar mijn eerste en allerlaatste blogmeeting geweest zijn. Afin, Bruno, doet dat goed zo zonder weblog, en spaar mij alvast een plaatsje als huisontwerper bij Real want een logo in Halloween-stijl voor een internationaal IT-bedrijf getuigt van slechte smaak ! (Google buiten beschouwing gelaten)

I’m glad to have found this piece of text in the latest Dutch magazine “Informatie” (Information). It perfectly describes my irritations of meaningless instant messaging. Sometimes I wonder how some people of my school can leave their msn the whole day on.  When I then turn online, it only takes couple of minutes before they start shooting stupid questions or boring Hey how are you’s. A collegue student that I was working with the last couple of months even asked me if I could give him both my msn, icq and skype.

The magazine concludes that companies should adapt their systems to this new type of communication. Will it improve teamwork ? Or will it decrease the attention ? In my case it’s the latter.

Logboek :

Stap 1. Kopiëren van bestanden voor Vista. Gaat ongelooflijk snel, te snel om geloofwaardig te zijn.
Stap 2. Uitpakken van bestanden. Blijft gedurende 10 minuten op 0 % hangen, om dan ineens naar de 100% te vliegen
Stap 3. Onderdelen installeren. Nog sneller dan het licht.
Stap 4. Updates installeren. Waarom updates ? Waarom moeten wij dit eigenlijk weten ? Ah marketing..
Stap 5. Vista configureren voor de eerste startup. Een stroom aan bolletjes houdt het geheel spannend.
Stap 6. Installatie voltooien. Blijkbaar het lastigste werk want dit neemt maar liefst 15 minuten in beslag.

Stap 7. Instellen profiel. Geen backward functie?
Stap 8. De prestaties van mijn computer worden bepaald. En ik die dacht dat het nu al wel gebeurd was bij het voltooien van de installatie. Mijn naam en tijdszone zijn natuurlijk wel van belang voor die prestaties…

Stap 9. Bureaublad voorbereiden. Wtf ?

Stap 10. Drivers installeren. Dat zal voor vanavond zijn..

Voorlopige conclusie. Onlogische frustrerende installatie, en een op het eerste zicht rommelige interface. Maar we biljven hopen !
Tijd om deel 2 van mijn inboedel in Gent te gaan halen.

Maar we blijven volhouden !

Deze voormiddag, net voor de zware nederlaag van Datacommunicatie, toonde Tino ons al een demo.
Eerlijk gezegd, ik had Vista nog nooit in levende lijve gezien. Behalve dan op Javapolis, waar een aantal bekende Microsoft bloggers/medewerkers zorgvuldig enkele kritische vragen van onze mede mac gebruiker Bruno probeerde te ontwijken.

Wat mij op het eerste zicht opviel : Wat is het verschil met XP ? Het ziet er veel mooier uit, maar wat is er verder zo vernieuwend aan ?
De zoekfunctie, en dat is overigens ook zo bij Spotlight op Mac OS X, vind ik helemaal niet handig. Stel dat je meerdere versies van een document hebt, welke meerwaarde geeft dan het zoeken ? Of een bestandsnaam komt meerdere keren voor. Welk document moet je dan precies selecteren ?

De nieuwe Windows + TAB functie, die je een overzicht geeft van welke vensters er open staan is alles behalve overzichtelijk. Je moet al precies weten hoe een venster eruit ziet, want de naam staat er niet bij. Bovendien krijg je maar een klein deeltje te zien, tenzij je elk venster een voor een gaat bekijken. Kortom : nutteloos, ik zal blijven werken met Alt + TAB (een functie die overigens wél is verbeterd).

Meer functies moet ik nog ontdekken, want toen begon het helaas deprimerende examen. Een vak van 1 uur in de week, waarvan maar enkele lessen over RMI, Corba, TCP en UDP, en dan nog geven ze ons een examen waarvoor meer Java kennis (threads) nodig is dan de effectieve leerstof. Niemand kwam dan ook goed gezind buiten. En zo sloten wij een examenperiode af die over de hele lijn zelfs ontgoochelend was. Op de gezamelijke drink achteraf heerste dan ook een neergeslagen sfeer. Van de 10 vakken verwacht ik 2 buizen (mijn eerste in 3 jaar) : AI en Datacom..

Maar goed. Tijd om vooruit te kijken, want lang heb ik niet meer !
Nog 3 weken, en dan verlaat ik (voor een tijdje) ons allerliefste vaderland. Naar betere oorden misschien. Ik hoop er toch een nieuwe visie te krijgen over het leven en mijn verdere studies. Ik twijfel nog wat over een voortgezette opleiding, .. of totaal iets anders (–> grafische vormgeving !!)

Zichtbaar moe van de examenperiode dus…

Hence, no Java 6. But it was quite funny ! I didn’t go to a forum before (except for the boekenbeurs) and so I wasn’t prepared for the huge amount of information and gadgets.

Some things I noticed :

- Lots of free food and drinks – picture (Bruno collecting lots of coke)

- Companies who want to collect all your personal data (but you get a gadget for return !! ) – picture (Ward putting his emailadres into the Canon machine, so he can get his Java cap).

- the corner of IBM. Literally pushed back in the corner. Bit sad, isn’t it ? – picture

- Microsoft-boys presenting their Vista. – picture1, picture2 (mcBruno getting his first visual studio, before throwing it away again… why bruno why ? :-p)

- Oracle at JavaPolis. After working with 9i I was a bit scared of them, but actually it now seems a very interesting company ! – picture

- Interesting keynotes of Spring, Pojo and jMaki, although I fell asleep during one

- Lots of Macs !!!

- My classmates getting high ranks with JavaBlackBelt ! – picture

P.S. I’m changing to another webhoster with JSP. During the following days some parts of Screenager can become unreachable.

During a 3-hours fancy course yesterday, Ms. De Donder told us again about the so called revival of the ancient language Cobol. In business the youngest programmers who still know about the structure of Cobol are about to retire. Still, the language is deeply burned into the most important and highly sensitive infrastructures of the world, such as bank software and the internet. The problem is of course that companies are terrified to switch over to fast modern languages such as C++. One mistake or shutdown could lead to millions of unsatisfied customers. Meanwhile, Cobol-programs do still work at very high performances, so why all the fuss ?

Because it will actually die some day. Not because of the legacy paradigm or the expensive maintenance. But simply because almost every student in my class hates it ! IBM already saw this evolution long time before, so they introduced the specialization mainframes in our education. Unfortunately, only about 5 students choose for this option. (not including me, because i don’t like computer architecture)

In my specialization ‘programming’, we fortunately continue to get 10 to 15 hours of Cobol. Considering that last year I became the best student in Cobol with 17 / 20, I expect that finding a job with big cash won’t be that hard. At least if designing maintaining back-end software would be at my interest…

I think I have a luxury problem.

I sometimes wonder how my parents would react when their home computer won’t start up any more.
They bought their Medion PC for about 6 years ago in Aldi. A good investment, because the machine by that time was very modern and fresh, and surprisingly it still is today. I believe you could still sell it today for a bunch of money.

But can you imagine it still contains a partition of Windows 98 ? Like we would ever use that again after switching to XP ? But ok, this shouldn’t cause any problems, despite the limited space.

What I am concerned of is that XP hasn’t been re-installed since the first day. Actually, a good OS never has to be re-installed at all. But Windows does. Once a year. Or you must be a very patient person.

In the last 6 years, I scanned about a dozen of viruses, and hundreds of spyware. Switching on Windows brings up a black screen for about 20 seconds in the middle of the start-up process. Surfing with IE, Firefox and Opera activates random popups with ads. Adaware nor Spybot nor Symantec aren’t able to delete this trojan. Two Windows-logins are used to do the same sort of jobs : one for my mother and one for my father. Reducing to one account isn’t possible because some programs preferences are physically nested in these accounts. Same problem with the partitions : There is a Program Files folder on C: and on D:

I asked several times to reinstall Windows, but I’m not aloud because my parents are afraid to perform the complicated installation of their VNC programs again.

Secretly I hope that one day Windows won’t start-up any more at all. Then I could do a proper installation of Windows, with multiple partitions and just one user account. (Without Windows 98 of course )

Or should i switch to another OS ? May be Ubuntu ? …Or Vista ?
If you read the following article, you will believe that the first option would actually be more convenient than heading for Vista !

6 months ago, I did the test myself. I inserted a Ubuntu Live CD in our home computer, and called my sister to check her mail, browse the internet and chat with Gaim. I told her that I only changed the interface of Windows.
Surprisingly she was able to do all the jobs ! She only felt a bit inconvenient with the industrial environment and limited functionality of Gaim.

Finally, a tip for all computer leeks who read this post : Download the free Ubuntu Live CD, burn the image to a CD-rom and put it somewhere on your desk. When Windows crashes, insert the CD, follow some configuration steps and go ahead to browse the internet or check your webmail ! You will also be able to browse through your Windows-partition within Ubuntu. No need to backup your stuff !

(Of course, you can also switch to Mac… if you can effort it)

If Operating Systems were Airlines…

DOS AIR – All the passengers go out onto the runway, grab
hold of the plane, push it until it gets in the air, hop on,
jump off when it hits the ground again. Then they grab the
plane again, push it back into the air, hop on, etcetera.
WINDOWS ’95 AIRLINES – The terminal is very neat
and clean, the attendants are all very attractive and the pilots
very capable. The fleet is immense. After your plane arrives
6 months late, you begin to wonder why it has not arrived
yet. Your yet takes off without a hitch, pushing above the
clouds, and at 20,000 feet it crashes without warning.

MAC AIRWAYS – The cashiers, flight attendants, and
pilots all look the same, feel the same and act the same.
When asked questions about the flight they reply that you
don’t want to know, don’t need to know, and would you
please return to your seat and watch the movie.

OS/2 SKYWAYS – The terminal is almost empty, with only
a few prospective passengers milling about. Airline personnel
walk around, apologising profusely to customers in hushed
voices, pointing from time to time to the sleek, powerful jets
outside the terminal on the field. They tell each passenger
how good the real flight will be on these new jets and how
much safer it will be than Windows Airlines, but that they
will have to wait a little longer for technicians to finish
flight systems.

FLY WINDOWS NT – All the passengers carry their seats
out onto the tarmac, placing the chairs in the outline of a
plane. They all sit down, flap their arms and make jet
swooshing sounds as if they are flying.

UNIX EXPRESS – Each passenger brings a piece of the
airplane and a box of tools to the airport. They gather on the
tarmac, arguing constantly about what kind of plane they

We zijn reeds 10 jaar verder. Inmiddels heeft Apple een tiental nieuwe features van Leopard voorgesteld. Vista is on the way (but far far away). Mijn grote vraag : zullen deze twee rivalen mijn grote wens waarmaken en Tagging toevoegen aan Spotlight en Doggy Search ?
